If you ever feel like housework piles up faster than you can tackle it, I hope this will encourage you to break it down into small daily pieces — and show you how to take the decision fatigue out of cleaning.
Why a Daily Cleaning Rhythm Works
A while back, I realized that just like meal prepping in small batches throughout the week, breaking cleaning tasks into bite-sized daily chores makes the whole house feel more manageable.
Instead of one giant deep-clean on the weekend, I do one or two small things each day — and give myself lots of grace when life happens and it doesn’t go perfectly.
Here’s My Simple Weekly Cleaning Schedule
It’s not fancy — but it works:
- Monday: Vacuum the main level
- Tuesday: Wipe down the main level bathrooms
- Wednesday: Clean the kids’ floor — two bedrooms, en suite bathrooms, playroom. Vacuum, wipe surfaces, empty trash.
- Thursday: Tidy the lower level — mudroom, laundry room, art room, media area. Vacuum, mop if needed, scrub sticky windowsills (thanks, watercolor art!), scoop cat litter.
- Friday: Catch-up day. Water plants, do any missed tasks, random chores.
- Saturday: Nothing unless I feel inspired.
- Sunday: Change and wash all crib sheets and bed linens.
It’s fluid and flexible — if something doesn’t get done, it’s okay. Some weeks, the toilets don’t get scrubbed. Some weeks, the kids dump a gallon of water beads on the playroom floor and I need an extra mop day. It all evens out.
Add a Few Monthly Tasks
I keep a dry-erase calendar in our pantry where I jot down bigger tasks to sprinkle in when I can:
- Mopping hardwoods with Murphy’s Oil Soap
- Scrubbing the master shower
- Dusting corners and ceiling fans
- Washing bath towels every two weeks
Nothing fancy — just reminders to keep things on track.
The Secret: Take the Decision Out of It
The best part of this simple plan? I don’t stare at a messy bathroom on a Monday and wonder when I’ll clean it — I knowit’s a Tuesday job.
No more dreading when or how — it just happens when it happens.
A Few Extra Tiny Tricks
- If a mess will take less than 3 minutes, do it now.
- When I’m wiping the counters, I quickly swipe sticky toddler handprints off the cabinet pulls.
- If you’re already in tidy mode, keep going for a few extra seconds — future you will be grateful!
We Don’t Have a Housekeeper — and That’s Okay
We haven’t had help since we left DC — and honestly, this little daily routine makes it work.
Of course, my husband and I split plenty of chores too (go back and listen to Episode 20 for our daily home flow!).
But the point is: small, simple daily cleaning keeps the house feeling good enough — so we can spend weekends living life, not just scrubbing floors.
And a Quick Book Note…
I know it’s been a minute since I did a book episode — I’ve been reading some very heavy nonfiction and needed a break.
So I just grabbed Finlay Donovan Is Killing It from my local bookstore, and it’s exactly the light, fun fiction escape I needed. Sometimes you just need a little getaway in book form — and this is mine right now.
✨ Thanks for being here, friend. Listen to the full episode for more details, and I hope you find a cleaning rhythm that feels doable too.
