Back-to-School Shifts
This is our first week back to school 🍎. Back-to-school season always brings excitement, fresh energy, and change—but I can’t help feeling a little wistful about saying goodbye to summer (see photo above). By the end of August, our family had found such a good rhythm, and everything felt like it was flowing. And now, with school starting, everything shifts again—new routines, new schedules, new energy. It can feel like a lot, especially with Labor Day around the corner and the holidays quickly piling up. The last third of the year is always a whirlwind: birthdays, school activities, holiday prep, meal planning, home projects, and travel. This year, I wanted one place to hold it all—so I created something I call The Fall Dashboard.
What is the Fall Dashboard?
Think of it as one master list—a two-page spread in my day planner that holds everything at a glance:
- Family commitments 👨👩👧👦💞
- Home projects 🏡🛠️
- Seasonal priorities 🍂🎃
- Meal planning 🥘📝
- Personal goals 🌱⭐
I’m a list-maker by nature. I keep an annual list, a home project list, and usually a seasonal brain dump. But that many lists can feel overwhelming.
So instead, I created a single “dashboard” that pulls from all of those lists, distilling what matters most right now.
Yes—it’s another list. But this one is different. It helps me see the whole season at once, prioritize what’s urgent, and release what can wait.
The Five Buckets of My Fall Dashboard
I break my dashboard into five main buckets. These are the backbone of my fall planning and give structure to the season.
1. Weekly Flow 📅🔄
This is my “ideal week.” It includes all the fixed commitments: school drop-offs, pick-ups, extracurriculars, my gym time, errands, and even weekly playdates with friends.
Once the non-negotiables are written down, I can see where the open spaces are for things like:
- Grocery runs
- Meal prep
- Doctor’s appointments
- Target Pick-Ups
- Coffee & Playdates with friends
This “spine” of the week helps me anchor everything else.
2. Meal Planning (The Meal Wheel) 🍽️🔄
Meal planning is another anchor for me. I’ve created what I call a meal wheel—a set of weekly dinner themes I can rotate through.
Here’s what it looks like this fall:
- Sunday: Soup + sourdough
- Monday: Ground beef (meatloaf, meatballs, lasagna, etc.)
- Tuesday: Asian night (Korean tacos, Thai chicken, sesame beef)
- Wednesday: Salmon night
- Thursday: Steak or chicken + veggies
- Friday: Steak or chicken + challah night
- Saturday: Leftovers (Shabbat = no cooking!)
It’s flexible, but when Sunday rolls around and I’m too tired to meal plan from scratch, I have a framework ready to go.
3. Seasonal Anchors 🎂🎃🎄
This bucket holds all the family events, holidays, and traditions for fall, listed chronologically.
For us, that includes:
- Three birthdays between back-to-school and New Year’s
- Jewish holidays
- Annual trip to the pumpkin patch
- Halloween costumes
- Thanksgiving prep
- Hanukkah and Christmas
- Grandparent visits
By putting them in order, I know what to focus on first (like birthdays) and what can wait until later (like Thanksgiving).
4. Home Projects & Organization 🏡🧹👕
This is the invisible work that makes a season run smoothly:
- Rotating kids’ clothing for colder weather
- Buying winter gear in advance
- Packing away summer items
- Passing along outgrown baby clothes
We’re also tackling a few house projects this fall: a master bedroom refresh, updating our basement gallery wall, cleaning out the laundry room, and giving our powder room a facelift.
Breaking them down by early, mid, and late fall keeps me realistic about timing.
5. Personal Goals & Self-Care 🌱💖🧘
As a stay-at-home mom, it’s easy to put myself last. But this bucket is a reminder that my rhythm fuels everything else.
Some of my fall goals:
- Continue podcasting weekly (even though it costs me money!)
- Keep sending birthday cards
- Go to the gym 1–2x per week
- Restart daily walks now that the weather is cooler
- Make time for reading and rest during nap times
It’s about protecting little pockets of time for myself, so I can show up better everywhere else.
Why the Dashboard Works
The dashboard isn’t about perfection. It’s about visibility and pacing.
When I can see the moving parts—weekly rhythms, meals, events, projects, and personal goals—fall feels more manageable. Small wins compound. Predictable things stay predictable.
Instead of spinning in circles or feeling paralyzed, I have a framework that makes room for both structure and flexibility.
Your Turn 💫
I really encourage you to create your own fall dashboard. It can be as detailed or as simple as you need.
Whether it’s chronological or categorized, color-coded or plain, having a single place to hold your season’s priorities can turn fall from overwhelming to joyful.
Cooler weather, cozier rhythms, and family traditions are right around the corner. With a little structure, we can actually enjoy the swirl instead of getting lost in it.
